Workers Power condemns the latest attack on Iran by the United States and Israel. This is the second unprovoked assault carried out during negotiations over Iran’s nuclear programme. The war of aggression, including the assassination of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, shows that Israel and its US patron recognise no law but their own power.
Trump’s appeal for the Iranian people to overthrow the regime is a cynical attempt to enlist their democratic aspirations in the service of US imperialism. The genocidal butchers of Gaza are the number one enemies of the democratic aspirations of the peoples of the region. The members of the NATO alliance who serve as Washington’s loyal lieutenants are equally complicit — none more so than the UK government, which has abjectly refused to condemn the US-Israeli war and instead deployed military forces to protect its regional allies: the Zionist state and the brutal Gulf dictatorships.
Imperialist regime change delivered by bombs and assassinations does not open the road to democracy. History shows it leads to chaos, civil war, and the rise of new authoritarians — as the ruins of Iraq and Libya attest. A devastated Iran, plunged into conflict and warlordism, serves US and Israeli strategic interests. It does not serve the Iranian people.
The liberation of Iran from the Islamic Republic can only be carried out by the people of Iran themselves — the workers, women, and youth who have fought that regime at enormous cost. We stand in unconditional solidarity with their struggle, against the mullahs, against the monarchists, and against the imperialist bombs and sanctions that strengthen the regime’s fraudulent claim to be the defender of Iran against Zionism and imperialism.
The international working class movement is the only consistent ally of the Iranian people’s struggle for democracy and self-determination. In defending Iran against this war of aggression we give no support to the clerical dictatorship — we act in solidarity with the just struggle of the Iranian people to determine their own future, free from imperialist blackmail.
This criminal adventure risks igniting a wider regional conflagration with unpredictable consequences for working people everywhere — rising prices, economic instability, and the danger of escalation. It underlines, once again, that there is no peaceful or stable future under this system.
Our movement must participate in the struggle to defeat this imperialist war by taking direct action against the war machine. In Britain that means stepping up workers’ action to impose a total boycott of Israel, demanding the closure of US military bases in Britain, and fighting for the UK’s withdrawal from the warmongering NATO alliance.
