Why join Workers Power? Capitalism is organised. The people who want to overthrow it must organise too.
Workers resist every day. They strike for better pay, organise against exploitation and oppression, and mobilise against war, racism and environmental destruction. These struggles can win important gains and change the people involved in them. But too often they remain isolated. Leaders settle for less than could have been won, movements lose momentum, and the lessons of one struggle are forgotten before the next begins.
Capitalism will not be defeated by anger, protest or elections alone. The ruling class has its companies, political parties, media, state institutions and international alliances. The working class needs an organisation of its own: one that can preserve experience, develop a strategy, unite different struggles and fight for political power.
Workers Power exists to help build that organisation. We are a small revolutionary communist group, and we do not pretend to be the mass revolutionary party the working class needs. Our aim is to build an organisation that can contribute to creating that party through common action, political clarification and principled regroupment.
What membership means
Joining Workers Power means becoming part of a collective political project, rather than remaining an isolated socialist or a passive supporter. Members:
- take part in a branch and in deciding the organisation’s politics and priorities;
- study Marxism and learn from the history and experience of the working-class movement;
- work towards becoming organised activists in their workplace, trade union or campaign;
- help produce and distribute our newspaper, website, leaflets and strike bulletins;
- contribute financially, according to their means, to sustaining our common work.
Workers Power is organised through democratic centralism. Members have full rights to debate, disagree, organise around differences and elect the leadership. Once decisions have been reached, we act together to carry them out. Democracy allows us to correct mistakes and develop our politics; unity in action enables us to intervene effectively.
Nobody is expected to arrive knowing everything or able to take on every responsibility. Members develop through political education, practical experience and the support of their comrades. Employment, health, caring responsibilities and other circumstances affect what each person can do. What membership requires is a commitment to learn, contribute and develop as part of the organisation.
