Labour councils are implementing Tory austerity

BRANCHES & CLPs Across the country local Labour councils are implementing Tory austerity in the face of resistance from workers, youth and unemployed – and increasingly from local Labour parties. The Labour leadership’s decision to launch a national campaign against central government cuts to local authorities is welcome – and long overdue. We hope that Labour councillors will welcome this development and use their position to encourage support for the campaign in towns and cities up and down the country. While many Labour councillors are genuinely trying to preserve the most vital local services, too many are actively fighting against trade unions and local residents. This paper supports the defence of every local service and encourages all members to do likewise. For a model motion for use in branches and CLPs, and a response to Jeremy Corbyn, John McDonnell’s letter on council budgets, turn to the centre pages
