The arson attack which destroyed four Jewish community ambulances in north London was an antisemitic crime.
The ambulances were parked outside a synagogue. The purpose of the attack was plainly to terrorise Jewish people in their communities.
We condemn this outrage and stand in solidarity with all victims of antisemitic violence.
Racist attacks don’t just target the victims. They also poison social relations, sow distrust and fear, and create barriers between communities.
The attack on the Hatzola volunteer service, which works with the NHS to provide essential infrastructure to the wider community, demonstrates particularly malevolent intent.
We must be vigilant against the political and social conditions in which this hatred grows. War abroad, communal polarisation at home, and reactionary politics all create conditions in which racist ideas spread, and communities are set against one another.
Nigel Farage has already tried to use this attack to stir hostility to Muslims and migrants. Others have rushed to link it to Iran before any responsibility has been established. Worse, some who claim to be anti-Zionists have promoted the claim that it was a false-flag operation by Israeli secret services. These claims are made without evidence. They point in different political directions, but all deepen division and inflame reaction.
We can expect that the Labour government and Zionist campaigners will exploit this crime to demand further attacks on freedom of expression and the Palestine solidarity movement. We reject any attempt to identify criticism of Israel’s genocide with antisemitism. But in turn we must systematically oppose and root out antisemitic ideas conspiracies within our own movement.
We reject all attempts to place blame either on the victims of this attack or on innocent people. Jewish people are not responsible for the crimes of the Israeli state. Muslims, migrants and refugees are not responsible for this attack. Socialists oppose every attempt to turn one section of working people against another.
Whatever specific account is eventually given of this crime, its effect is to spread fear, strengthen antisemitic narratives, and deepen mistrust between communities. We oppose that. The enemy is not Jews, Muslims or migrants, but the warmongers and racists at home and abroad, and the imperialist system that breeds war, racism and division.
